[Update: Article 3] The “Chief Guest” of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Usuki Peace Pagoda.
「日本語below」After the meeting at the Usuki city office, H. E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Japan was scheduled to participate as the guest of honor in the 50th Anniversary celebration of building the Peace Pagoda at Usuki temple. As invited, we escorted H.E. the Ambassador to the place where the event took place by 11.00 am. On that day, in addition to the guest of honor, there was a representative from the parliament of Japan and also the Mayor of Usuki city among those who took part in the event as the guest speakers.In the beginning, there were some religious rituals. After that H.E. the Ambassador was invited to deliver his speech to the audience. First, he spoke about how Sri Lanka and Japan’s bond started with the spread of Buddhism all over the world 2000 years ago. Then he addressed how that religious bond was extended and strengthened into a political relationship after the second world war as a result of the foreign policy of Mr. J. R. Jayewardene, a former president of Sri Lanka. H.E. the Ambassador delivered his speech in English and it was simultaneously translated to the Audience by the Chairman of SLJFA.Further, the other guest speakers also stressed how important it is to maintain a good relationship between the two states in the future during their speeches.H.E. the Ambassador did not forget to speak with the audience even after the event concluded. Then the chief guest and all other VIPs were escorted to the main temple building for lunch.Next H.E. the Ambassador had an unexpected visit to “Nakatsu” city even though there was no such event in the original schedule. The reason was undeniable. During the discussion with some participants in the event, Honorable Ambassador found out that some of the historical pieces of evidence of the relationship between the two countries still remained in Nakatsu City. And further, that information is very important for his research. Therefore he has eagerly waited to get this kind of opportunity to broaden his knowledge about such an important historical coincidence that took place in Oita prefecture.To be cont. 第3章：臼杵仏舎利塔50周年記念法要 令和5年5月21日、建立50周年を迎える臼杵仏舎利塔の法要が臼杵市諏訪の現地で行われました。法音寺上人、中野五郎臼杵市長、県議会議員、大学教授、沢山の国内外関係者の皆様含め、市内外の信徒や関係者約100人が参列しました。 この場を借りて、別府妙法寺主任に特別に「スリランカ親日協会」スタッフ一同、感謝申しあげます。 臼杵市とスリランカ・キャンディ市は仏教を中心とした史跡や文化財があ縁で姉妹都市関係を締結しており、スリランカのロドニー・ペレーラ駐日大使も出席して頂きました。 大使は、「両国の絆をより強化することで、未来の世代により良い世界を築くことが出来ると信じている」と挨拶しました。私たちも知らない、知っておくべきことも大使のお話の中で、学ぶことができました。 続いて大使は、日本とスリランカが長年にわたってどのように緊密な関係を築いてきたかを振り返ってお話されました。「1862年に福沢諭吉がヨーロッパへ向かう途中でスリランカを訪れ、そして帰路にスリランカを訪れたことが慶應義塾大学で保管されている福沢諭吉自身の日記に記録されています。福沢諭吉が慶應義塾を創設した際、仏教を学びたい学生にはスリランカに留学することを勧め、1880年から日本人学生のスリランカへの仏教留学が始まりました。 その結果、1889年にスリランカから仏教徒が来日するようになりました。 スリランカと日本はさらに親しい関係を築くことになります。1940年代には痛ましい戦争の犠牲者となったにもかかわらず、スリランカは1951年のサンフランシスコ講和会議で、日本の新しい出発を国際社会に訴えました。 スリランカ代表だったJ・R・ジャヤワルダナは氏のスピーチの最後にお釈迦様の教えから重要な言葉を引用しています。 “人はただ愛によってのみ憎しみを越えられる 人は憎しみによっては憎しみを越えられない” これが我々を数百年もの間、共通の文化と伝統でお互いに結びつけたのであります。」と語りました。 今現代の私たち、そして未来のバトンを引き継ぐ子供達に重要な言葉を頂き、大使に心から感謝を申し上げております。 そして、大使のスピーチを英語から日本語に訳してくれた当協会の会長に感謝をしたいと思います。 法要後大使は、皆さんと食事し、福沢諭吉が1835年1月(天保5年12月)に生まれた、中津藩の大阪蔵屋敷の旧居を見学されました。今大使自身が研究しているプロジェクトに非常に重要な情報を得る事が出来ました。と話されました。 Special Thanks to:Sri Lanka Embassy,Tokyo -スリランカ大使館-
[Update: Article 2] Day 2 of the Modest Diplomat’s visit in Oita Prefecture. (Morning session)
「日本語 below」 On May 21st, Sunday 2023 morning the members of the SLJFA escorted H.E. the Ambassador to Usuki city hall for the meeting scheduled with Usuki city Mayor.The purpose of the discussion was about how to strengthen the relationship of the two countries based on the two sister cities which is Kandy (of Sri Lanka) and Usuki (in Japan). The focus was about how Sri Lanka can help to fulfill the labor shortage in rural areas like Usuki with the help of newly introduced visa system in Japan. Usuki is an agricultural city which suffers from labor shortage in almost every industry. In addition, Usuki Mayor introduced some local products to H.E. the Ambassador. The chairman, the Secretary of SLJFA and Professor Nishantha Giguruwa also took part in this meaningful meeting.After the discussion we escorted H.E the Ambassador to the “Usuki Peace Pagoda”, where the main event took place to commemorate 50th Anniversary of the Peace Pagoda was built. 【追記：記事2号】スリランカ駐日大使大分・別府訪問2日目 令和5年5月21日(日曜日)朝からスリランカ親日協会(SLJFA)として記念すべき日としてスタートです。 私たちが、人格者として尊敬しております、スリランカ駐日大使とともに臼杵市役所を訪問致しました。 今回は、臼杵市長様とお会いし、スリランカのキャンディ市と姉妹都市である臼杵市との親日関係をより深くはかる目的として企画しました。両国の歴史的な親日関係強化について話し合い、意見交換しました。今現在社会において、人手不足や人材不足に今後どのように向き合っていくかなど、都会だけではなく、地方にも人材を採用し、盛り上げていかなければならない。農業やあらゆる産業で人手不足に悩まされています。私達にできるとこに、言いかえれば、必要な時にできることからやっていかなければならないなど、さまざまな意見を交わせました。 臼杵市長様より、地元ならではのオリジナル商品などもご紹介いただき、臼杵市について知らないことも学べました。その後私たちは、大使を建立50周年記念式が行われる「臼杵仏舎利塔」へご案内致しました。 Special thanks to:Sri Lanka Embassy,Tokyo -スリランカ大使館-

In Beppu — 「日本語 below」 20th Saturday, May 2023 His Excellency the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Japan Honorable Mr. Rodney M. Perera arrived at Oita international airport in the evening and was welcomed by the committee members of SLJFA (Sri Lanka Japan Fellowship Association) and escorted to the Dinner meeting with the advisors of SLJFA. The meeting was successfully held at the Hotel Hajime (previously known as the Hotel New Matsumi). After the welcome at the hotel, H.E. the Ambassador addressed the meeting and he deeply spoke about strengthening the historic relationship between the two countries. Next, the advisors and the members of our association were able to exchange ideas with H.E. the Ambassador, specifically regarding the new working visa system in Japan and how Sri Lankan Embassy can help Japanese companies for recruiting skilled labor from Sri Lanka. Further, each advisor received a “Sri Lanka Japan Friendship coat pin” honoring their service to the Sri Lankan community living in Beppu. Finally, SLJFA presented a “Wind chime made by bamboo” which was “made in Beppu” as a symbolic gift to H.E. the Ambassador. 駐日スリランカ大使が大分・別府を訪問(2023年5月20日) E. ロドニー・M・ペレーラ駐日スリランカ大使が(20日)別府を初めて訪問されました。当日、スリランカ親日協会より歓迎会を開催し、顧問や役員やメンバー達約20人ほど参加しました。 食事会を別府ホテルニューはじめ(旧ホテルニュー松美)にて楽しみながら、それぞれ皆さんの意見交換や日本とスリランカの懸け橋として当会と大使館間の交流と今後の活動について話し合いました。続いて大使は、両国の歴史的な関係についてお話しされ、今後の両国の親日関係強化についても深く語りました。 話し合いには、新しい在留資格やビザ制度などについて意見交換し、スリランカから人材を日本国内企業に採用していただける方法などについても話し合いました。今後も大使館がスリランカ親日協会の活動をサポートしていきたいと応じました。 会食後大使より、日頃尽力して頂いているアドバイザーの方々にお礼としてジャパン・スリランカ フレンドシップ バッチを贈られました。スリランカ親日協会(SLJFA)より感謝とお礼のしるしに象徴的な贈り物である「別府産」の竹作品の風鈴を大使に贈呈しました。 Special Thanks to Sri Lanka Embassy,Tokyo -スリランカ大使館-

50th anniversary of building the “Peace Pagoda” (Saama chaithya) in Usuki temple commemorating the relationship of Sri Lanka and Japan based on Buddhism.The chief guest is H.E. the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Japan. スリランカ・キャンディ市と姉妹都市である大分県臼杵市にある(日本山妙法寺臼杵道場) 臼杵仏舎利塔が建築されて今年で、50周目となります。そこで今回は、令和5年5月21(日)にスリランカ駐日大使様をお迎えして、大法要を執り行うことになりました。
